In practical usage it can be a very obvious tool. Be it for survival or the old gut n' skinning of a fresh fish or game animal. But knowledge of knives in close quarter combat(CQC) seems to me as just as much of a necessity, whether your on the dishing or receiving end of a blade handler, you defiantly need full knowledge for protecting oneself and those you care for.
Take a this survival scenario to heart if you will . . . you have just gotten lost in a wilderness (fill in the blanks here as you see fit), a knife grants you ability to not only cut your wood, but functions at the end of a stick as a spear for fishing/hunting, truly it is a tool of tools used since ancient times.
When it comes to CQC, the well trained can make any horrific situation survivable with any sharp implement thus why I and my father carry a basic flip knife whenever deemed necessary, the world is . . . honestly, not a friendly place.
When I say trained I mean a person knowledged in the following;
- Knife Safety (So your not dicing yourselves up . . .)
- Combat (anti-knife, and when you yourself wield the knife) Appealing to all necessary lawful situations.
- The Law, now when I say this I mean those who think they can go about presenting their knife to any threat that presents itself, usually always leading to a situation that can land you in court and paying some serious fines.
- Telling someone you have a knife who is not provoking a serious threat against you is . . . Against the law
- Revealing your knife to that same person is Assault
- Attacking that person with that blade is Assault, Battery, and several other problems.
On a counter-point gun carrying I cannot support, holstering a weapon of such caliber most certainly leads to bad impressions and rash decisions. Someone carrying a gun can cause a lot of damage, its a "confidence" weapon something to give off the illusion that you have a lot of power . . . but in the real world it can lead to problems no man/woman should ever ave to go through (be it an accident or not).
In summary; weapons are honestly an invention of good intentions . . . which man has made into a harbinger of death and ill directed injury. No child or untrained individual should ever be able to wield a weapon of any caliber, and this fact, although common sense is never fully followed through by the idiots of humanity. I do hope change, if it comes, will lead not to the eradication of the very tools themselves but the people who wield them. (Not physically, I must point out)
